The Asian Nations Cup is a football competition between the best national teams from Asia. The winner becomes Asian Champion and is the representative of the Asian Confederation (AFC) at the FIFA Confederations Cup.
The 2019 Asian Nations Football Cup is the seventeenth edition of the Asian Football Cup. This is the second time that the United Arab Emirates has organized this competition, after the 1996 edition in which they finished finalists.
The 2019 Asian Cup is the first international competition to be played in 2019 and it is also the first to start since the end of the 2018 World Cup. The 2019 edition of the Asian Cup is the first to be play in the format of twenty-four teams.
The 2019 edition marks the first participation of Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines and Yemen in an international competition. The winner qualifies for the Confederation Cup 2021.
The Asian Nations Cup has been organized by the Asian Football Confederation since 1956. In 2004, the AFC decided to postpone for one year the organization of the 14th edition of the event to avoid the main event Asian football does not compete in the media with the Summer Olympic Games and the European Football Championship organized during these years. The Asian Cup, scheduled for 2008 in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam is therefore advanced by one year in 2007, in a sporting year rather poor in world sports events. The event, however, continues to be held every four years while bringing together the continent's top sixteen national teams.
Japan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and South Korea are the nations that shone most in the first 15 editions of this event. Thirty-two teams played at least once in the final phase of the competition.
